How we verified these figures
Nothing on this page is copied from a press release. Each unit spends two weeks carrying the whole household, with the previous router boxed. A 2Gbps fibre line, a fixed Wi-Fi 7 laptop client, and the same four positions in a 180m² brick house on every system.
| What we measure | How |
|---|---|
| Throughput at 5m | iperf3 for five minutes, same room, line of sight, averaged across three runs. |
| Throughput at 20m | The same test two floors away through brick, which is where marketing figures collapse. |
| Roaming | Walking a fixed route with a continuous ping, counting dropped packets at each handover. |
| Setup time | From opening the box to a working connection, timed, using the app the maker intends. |
| Device load | Forty-two devices connected, then the 20m test repeated to see what congestion costs. |
We deliberately do not publish combined band totals such as "BE22000", which no single client can ever reach. Every figure here is specific to one brick house. Timber-framed homes will see materially better range.
How it compares in the category
A specification only means something next to the alternatives. These are the networking we have measured under the same conditions.
| Model | Released | Price | Our score | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| eero 6+ | 2022 | £139 | 3 / 5 | Flats and smaller houses where the ceiling is the broadband line, not the router |
| Flint 2 | 2023 | £139 | 4 / 5 | Tinkerers, and anyone who wants a fast VPN at the router |
| UniFi Express (this page) | 2023 | £149 | 4 / 5 | A first step into prosumer networking without the usual outlay |
| TP-Link Deco XE75 | 2022 | £229 | 4 / 5 | Most homes — the sensible default unless you have a multi-gig line |
| WRX560 | 2023 | £259 | 4 / 5 | Anyone who wants to see and control exactly what is on their network |
| Asus RT-BE88U | 2024 | £399 | 4 / 5 | Anyone who wants to configure their network rather than accept defaults |
What the spec sheet leaves out
- Sustained performance — the standard figure above is a capability, not a promise about what happens after twenty minutes
- How it behaves when warm, which is where most of the difference between similarly specified networking actually lives
- Software support length, which decides how long this stays usable and appears on no specification sheet we have seen
- The thing we actually noticed most: it will manage up to four additional UniFi access points
What the numbers mean in use
Specifications describe capability, not experience. In practice the detail that mattered most was this: it will manage up to four additional UniFi access points. That is the sort of thing a table cannot capture.
Strengths on paper and in practice
- A full UniFi controller in a £149 box, which used to cost four times that
- The network insight is far beyond anything consumer gear shows
- It doubles as a controller for other UniFi hardware
Known limitations
- Wi-Fi 6 rather than 6E or 7
- Only two ports
- The learning curve is real if you have never used UniFi
Who this suits
This hardware is a good fit for a first step into prosumer networking without the usual outlay.
Behind this page
This reference page is written from the same testing notes as the reviews it supports, and it is revised whenever the hardware or the software underneath it changes. Where a figure appears here it has been measured rather than quoted from a specification sheet.
If something on this page no longer matches what you are seeing, it is out of date rather than disputed — tell us and it gets checked again.
